Malerba works for the program "Transformation of Economic and Social Systems" at IDOS. His research focuses on the links between poverty reduction policies and climate change mitigation, with an emphasis on the role of social protection. In his research and publications, he employs different quantitative methods and a combination of datasets.

Malerba holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and regularly collaborates with various international organizations, including the World Bank. He also teaches at various universities.
