The effects of mattering and marginality on first-year college student academic performance and psychological well being.
Why did you want to be a GEOG/GIS/ENSP major?
I was drawn to the Geography department because of the ability to look critically at the interrelationships and distribution of people in the world. I found it fascinating and unlike many other majors, it felt alive to me.
What internships or independent research did you do as a GEOG/GIS/ENSP major?
While working on my Geography degree I did an internship with the Maryland Public Research Interest Group. I worked with a classmate to lead a hunger and homelessness campaign in Washington DC. It helped me to extend the curriculum and allowed me to make real world connections to what I was learning in the classroom.
What recommendations would you make to current GEOG/GIS/ENSP majors for career and academic success while they are still undergraduates?
I would say for you to remember that the learning that takes place within the classroom is only part of what you gain from this experience. Learn to take ownership over your learning and find the areas within the discipline that speak to you.
What recommendations would you make to current GEOG/GIS/ENSP majors for career and academic success after graduation?
After graduation, whether you are going into a field where you are directly utilizing the skills that you have learned or not, begin thinking about how you can draw on the knowledge that you have gained and string together a narrative that can articulate the connection between your previous academic pursuits and your future goals.
