Dr. Giovanni Baiocchi, Associate Research Professor in the Department of Geographical Sciences, presented at the Systematizing and upscaling urban solutions for climate change mitigation (SUUCCM) International Conference (September 13-14, 2018) in Berlin. The meeting centered on the role of cities in climate change mitigation and how big data and machine learning can help locate solutions at micro-scale and scaling them up to city-level. Dr. Baiocchi talked about how the emergence of spatial data science, integrating tools from remote sensing and geographic information sciences for the collection of large heterogeneous data, its management, analysis, integration, and visualization, is providing the practical means to produce and understand useful city typologies that can provide a comprehensive understanding of the impact of cities and can help in designing urban transitions into low-carbon futures.
