Congratulations to our February Undergraduate of the Month, Julia Bell! Julia is a Double major in ENSP: Biodiversity and Conservation, and GIS. She is a Senior who will be returning for a fifth year to complete her MS degree. Continue reading to learn more about this talented student!
What are your interests within your program(s)?
Coding, big data, spatial analysis, and the use of GIS in defense
What previous jobs, internships, and volunteer experience have you had?
I have previously interned at ESSIC, START, and ESRI. I am currently working as an undergraduate assistant at the UMD GIS Services center.
Where have you recently interned?
Esri Support Services in Redlands, CA.
What were your internship responsibilities?
I was in technical support, working for the ArcGIS Enterprise usage team. This involved performing testing and research on ArcGIS Server and Portal cases, and the implementation and federation of ArcGIS server and Portal. I also logged bugs and enhancements as they were reported.
What project(s) are you working on or contributing to?
I didn’t really work on projects, but helped with calls/cases Some were even from big companies such as Walmart, Nike, and Bank of America.
How is the internship experience relevant to your studies in Geographical Sciences?
I was able to learn a ton about the Server side of GIS, as well as mobile GIS and ArcGIS online, and how the GIS industry works as a whole.
What are your career goals after you graduate?
I will be returning to UMD for a 5th year to complete my M.S. I am also interning at the ESRI D.C. office this summer as a solution engineer on the defense team.
What are some of your hobbies?
I’m on the women’s club ice hockey team
