Gene (as he was known in the Department) passed on 1 February 2014.  A graduate of the University of Maryland, he served as Geography Department Chair at the University of the District of Columbia before moving to UMD College Park. He joined the teaching faculty of the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland in the mid-1990s. He was the first of several full-time instructors who joined the department to support undergraduate teaching, providing release time for our increasingly successful externally funded faculty members. Gene provided undergraduate instruction in physical geography, particular climatology and geomorphology, maintaining a vibrant and growing undergraduate program in the Geographical Sciences Department, while other faculty members concentrated more on grant – supported research and our graduate program. He was genuinely appreciated by his students and colleagues alike and contributed substantially to the rapidly evolving success of the department as a leader in the discipline of geography. Gene even took time to explore his ever expanding studies on the role of time in geography. He will be missed.

Gene’s funeral was held this morning, February 6th, at Harry Witgke’s Family Funeral Home. If you would like to sign the Kinerney family guestbook, please click here
