At the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Middle Atlantic Division of the AAG, Joshua Wayland received the AAG Council Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper at a Regional Meeting. The award of $1000 goes toward expenses of attending the Annual Meeting of the AAG (Have fun in New Orleans, Josh!). His paper, “Linking Natural Resources and Civil Conflict: A Spatial Panel Regression Approach”, was chosen from among 6 entries. He reported on his mediation analysis of data from 147 studies on spatially explicit conflict events, investigating the causes of the conflicts. The paper is part of his dissertation research on the Black Sand mining conflict in the Northern Philippines, directed by Dr. Martha Geores.
