Meet Lindsay Braviak, our June Undergraduate of the Month! Lindsay is seeking a double degree in Statistics and GIS with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the Robert H. Smith School of Business!
What are your interests within your program(s)?
I am interested in database design and geospatial statistics.
What previous jobs, internships, and volunteer experience have you had?
Currently, I’m interning with the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (AMTRAK) in the Service Planning & Costing, Finance Department as a GIS intern. In the past, I interned with the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) as a GIS intern. I also worked as an Operations Summer Analyst for Morgan Stanley, Baltimore. I’ve also published a paper from my internship with Stanford University School of Medicine as a Biomedical Informatics Research Assistant in Dr. Purvesh Khatri’s Dry Lab. My paper was about Genome-wide expression for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis: a multicohort analysis and was publish in the Lancet Journal of Respiratory Medicine.
Where are you/have you been interning?
This semester I have been interning with the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (AMTRAK). I am a GIS Intern in AMTRAK’s Service Planning & Costing branch of their Finance Department. It is actually a unique combination of my two interests, finance and GIS.
What project(s) are you working on or contributing to?
I am currently working on the Metrics required within the FAST Act (http://transportation.house.gov/fast-act/). I am responsible for finding open source data that is updated yearly and can be visualized in ArcGIS in a meaningful way. Amtrak is focusing on its commitment to reach underserved population within the United States.
How is the internship experience relevant to your studies in Geographical Sciences?
This internship is advancing my understanding of open source data manipulation, validation and visualization.
What are your career goals after your graduate?
I would like to go to Graduate School at UCSB.

What are some fun-facts about yourself?
I enjoy hiking and reading. I’m also a Resident Assistant here at UMD!
