Meet Samuel Besse, our June Undergraduate Student of the Month! Samuel is a double major in GIS and Economics.
What are your interests within your program?
I’m interested in web map design.
What previous jobs, internships, and volunteer experience have you had?
I have interned at the Laboratory for Physical Sciences. I worked on a project predicting failure rates of high performance computers.
Where are you/have you been interning?
I am currently interning at the Campus GIS team.
What project(s) are you working on or contributing to?
I am helping to write and edit a tutorial for the ArcGIS javascript application.
How is the internship experience relevant to your studies in Geographical Sciences?
It’s giving me great insight into GIS web design and experience with the industry standard tools that I wouldn’t have access to otherwise. I also get to work with a great trove of data.
What are your career goals after your graduate?
I’d like to go into the private sector doing consulting or maybe grad school.
What are some of your hobbies?
I’m on the club Ultimate Frisbee team.
Where are you from?
Arbutus, Maryland
What has been your favorite class at UMD? Why?
An honors seminar taught by Dr. Cole Miller called Life, the Universe, and Everything. I loved it because the professor was so excited about the topic and with a small class we could drive the discussion.
Regardless of if you decide to pursue the private sector or graduate school, we're sure you'll do well Samuel! Congratulations!
