Meet Kevin Mooney, our Alumni of the Month for March! Kevin was a GIS major and graduated in 2015. He is currently a minor league pitcher for the Washington Nationals organization.
What drew you to GEOG/GIS?
My experience with Dr. Luna in GEOG130 as a freshman gave me an interest in the geography department, after speaking with him I decided to go with GIS because of the technical side of the major.
What do you do at your current job?
Play baseball for the Washington Nationals minor league system.
What recommendations would you make to current GEOG/GIS/ENSP majors for careers and academic success while they are still undergraduates?
Take as many classes with Dr. Luna as possible and always go in and talk to him in his office if you have any questions (we agree with this sentiment Kevin! Students, come see us in the advising office!). It might sound unnecessary, but his classes are fun and engaging and you will learn something new in every class you take with him.
What recommendations would you make to current GEOG/GIS/ENSP majors for career and academic success after graduation?
Have a plan upon graduating. Know by your junior year whether you want to get a job, internship, or pursue a Master’s degree.
What do you miss the most about UMD?
The beauty of the campus, all of the friendly people all over campus, and LeFrak Hall (I spent enough time there I should miss it!)
What are some of your hobbies/interests?
Playing baseball, working out, reading
Anything else you’d like to add?
The GEOG department (and BSOS as a whole) was immensely helpful in planning my four-year academic success upon my declaration of choosing GIS as my major. The advising office and all of the professors are always open to discussion and will offer help as often as possible. Take advantage of the amazing resources right on campus!!
Thanks for the kind words Kevin and we wish you best of luck with the upcoming season! Congratulations and Go Nats!
