Meet Meg Cavanagh, our March Undergraduate of the Month! Meg is working towards a dual degree in Geography and Spanish Language and Literature!

Where are you from?

I'm from Catonsville, Maryland!

What are your interests within your program(s)?

My interests within my program are Urban Design and Environmental Policy.

What previous jobs, internships, and volunteer experience have you had?

Through the University of Maryland, I participated in their Alternative Breaks program. I've also been a part of the Living Classrooms Foundation, the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, and the SEIU MD/DC State Council.

Where are you/have you been interning?

I have been interning at the Earth Systems Science Interdisciplinary Center, Climate Indicators Team.

What are your internship responsibilities?

Part of my internship responsibility is to write blogs and social media posts to engage and inform the public about my team's research. I also have to fact-check research and references published in papers and grant proposals. Along with this, I coordinate with other climate science professionals in and around the University.

What project(s) are you working on or contributing to?

Currently I've been studying resilient infrastructure systems through case studies along the East Coast of the United States.

How is the internship experience relevant to your studies in Geographical Sciences?

My internship experience is relevant to my studies because it has taught me how to effectively communicate climate science to others and gain investment of the public. It has also taught me more about what creates more sustainably built environments.

What are your career goals after your graduate?

After I graduate, I want to work in Environmental Policy and Administration at the community level. I also plan to pursue graduate school and study Global Implications.

What are some of your hobbies?

I like to write and perform sketch comedy, read magical realism, and lose all trivia games with dignity!
