On October 16, PhD candidate Yuhan (Douglas) Rao attended the International workshop on Fiducial Reference Measurements for satellite derived temperature products validation organized by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) at Teddington, UK. The objective of this ESA sponsored three-day workshop is to gather international communities of Earth surface (Land, Water, Ice) temperature measurements to review the current status of measurement accuracy for satellite products validation. On behalf of the JPSS and GOES-R Land Surface Temperature (LST) product calibration and validation team, Yuhan was invited to give a talk on the validation status of the LST products for JPSS and GOES-R missions managed by NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). Yuhan is an gradaute research assistant working in the GOES-R LST Cal/Val team and Algorithm Working Group (AWG).

The workshop has invited 25 participants from ESA, NASA, NOAA, JAXA, EUMETSAT and universities to discuss the state of art of fiducial reference temperature measurements, which are critical for satellite products validation and uncertainty assessment. Led by NPL, the world leading metrology agency, the workshop focused on a metrology framework for Earth observations and how it can benefit the satellite derived temperature products. This metrology framework is fundamental for generation stale long term satellite derived temperature data records for climate sciences.
