PhD candidate Yuhan Rao received the Best Student Poster Award during the 2018 NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Annual Science Team Conference during August 27-30 at National Center for Weather and Climate Prediction, College Park.

Yuhan is the graduate research assistant for the algorithm working group and calibration/validation team of land surface temperature (LST) products for both JPSS mission and NOAA’s next generation geostationary satellite mission (GOES-R). His main responsibility is using various data source to evaluate operational LST products for both satellite missions and to provide suggestions for future algorithm improvements.

The theme of this year’s JPSS annual science team conference is “JPSS Applications” featuring user engagement of JPSS product development and enhancement. Yuhan presented his poster with the title of “Cross-Comparison of Land Surface Temperature Product between JPSS and GOES-R Missions: Towards the Enterprise Algorithm”. In the poster, Yuhan introduced a software package that he developed this year which automatically collects LST products from different satellite missions over continental United States and provides weekly/monthly reports to relevant stakeholders through email alerts. This software package is used by the team to routinely monitor the performance of LST products of different satellite missions.
