Dr. Budhendra Bhaduri, leads the Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is the founding director of the Oak Ridge Urban Dynamics Institute. High Resolution Cities: Discovering Human Dynamics through Data and Computing

Much of our scientific and technological focus has been to ensure a sustainable future with healthy people living on a healthy planet where energy, environment, and mobility interests are simultaneously optimized. The unprecedented abundance and evolution of data, scalable computing, and cyberinfrastructure have propelled the science of data analysis and visualization and have presented the opportunity to derive novel insights from emerging interconnected infrastructure networks. Characterization of the interactions between the human dynamics and energy and transportation infrastructures are essential and requires integration of three distinct components, namely, data, models and scalable computation. This Urban Dynamics Institute (UDI) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory fosters interdisciplinary research that integrates energy, transportation, cyber, and data sciences. This presentation will highlight UDI’s activities to model, analyze, and simulate urban environments at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions which provides an unparalleled opportunity for scenario-driven analysis, where the consequences of future technologies, policies, demographic, and socioeconomic changes can be studied.
