The Department of Geographical Sciences offers experiential learning credits. Students can earn credits for internships and independent study experiences.

 

To enroll in GEOG384, download the Application and GEOG384 syllabus on the Advising Forms page (scroll down to Special Courses Forms). Follow the "Steps to get Internship Credits" detailed below.

Steps to get Internship Credits 

  1. Secure an internship. Be sure to keep an eye on the geog-undergrad listserv and Handshake opportunities!
  2. Download the current semester's Application Packet from the Advising Forms page.
  3. Obtain your Host Agency Supervisor's Signature on the "Letter of Agreement" Form. 
  4. Bring Letter of Agreement (signed by your Host Agency Supervisor!) to the Geographical Sciences Advising Office (LEF 1149) during the schedule adjustment period for the semester in which you intend to enroll in GEOG384/5. 
  5. Enroll in GEOG384/5 via Testudo. 
  6. Send Letter of Agreement (signed by your Host Agency Supervisor and Academic Advisor!) to the Dr. Keith Yearwood (kyearwoo@umd.edu).
  7. Complete all assignments as detailed in the Internship Application Packet and as discussed with the Internship Professor.

To enroll in GEOG385, download the Application and GEOG385 syllabus on the Advising Forms page (scroll down to Special Courses Forms). Follow the "Steps to get Internship Credits" detailed below. Please note that if you complete GEOG384 for major credit, you can receive general elective credit for GEOG385.

The Department of Geographical Sciences offers experiential learning credits. Students can earn a total of six credits by signing up for GEOG398 after securing an independent study. To To enroll in GEOG398, download the Application and GEOG398 syllabus on the Advising Forms page (scroll down to Special Courses Forms).

Students are responsible for finding their own independent study, typically under the supervision of a professor in the Geographical Sciences. GEOG398 is available for 1-3 credits, and is repeatable for up to 6 credits.
